PV Potential Map

Overview

The Solar / PV Potential Map is a GIS dataset that maps the solar energy generation potential of rooftops across Prague 6, with a design that allows scaling to the entire City of Prague. The tool identifies which rooftops are technically suitable for photovoltaic installation accounting for orientation, inclination, shading, and, critically, monument protection constraints.

Developed specifically for the Prague 6 Living Lab, the map provides stakeholder feedback on its form, structure, and level of detail to ensure applicability in online tools such as the Prague 3D model, as well as in strategic decision-making at the municipal level.

The map serves as the data foundation for the RoofMatch App, which uses the solar potential data to connect building owners with investors for PV deployment.

The Challenge It Addresses

  • Technical: Identifying which rooftops in a heritage-rich district can host PV without violating monument protection constraints requires detailed spatial analysis.
  • Regulatory: The map overlays monument protection boundaries and protection levels, making it immediately clear which roofs are eligible and under what conditions.
  • Financial: By quantifying generation potential per roof, the map enables investment sizing and business case development.

How It Works: The tool processes spatial data including:

  • Rooftop geometry (orientation, inclination, area) derived from 3D city models
  • Shading analysis (surrounding buildings, vegetation, terrain)
  • Monument protection status and visibility constraints
  • Meteorological data (solar irradiance, weather patterns)

Key features:

  • Per-rooftop PV generation potential estimates
  • Monument protection overlay showing eligible/restricted areas
  • Scalable architecture developed for Prague 6, ready for city-wide deployment
  • Integration with the Prague 3D model
  • Data feed for the RoofMatch App

Where It’s Developed: Living Lab Prague 6, developed by Czech Technical University (CTU) in collaboration with the Municipality of Prague 6 and OICT.
